This film is not just a love story. It is the journey of two lost souls, determined to find each other in a world that wants to keep them apart. Fate brings them together but then takes her away again. Every time he tries to move on, she calls him back. Like a beautiful butterfly irresistibly drawn to the flame, no matter how many times he's burned, he can't stop chasing after her... Beautifully written and acted by Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, The Butterfly Effect reunites you with old friends from the past ten years - Candace (Ashton) and Eric (Eric Lively). When the film first opens, Candace is already missing. Eric's life is turned upside down - he's lost his girl, he's lost his son, and he's turning to alcohol to cope. A series of flashbacks reveal that Candace was disappearing into thin air. This phenomenon happened to both of them at various times over the course of their relationship. Eric can't stand it any longer, and decides that enough is enough - he must find the root cause of what is happening to them. He goes back to Dr. Sullivan (Amy Smart), who helps him remember everything about their past. As he goes back and back and back into their lives, we travel with him. Eric's memory takes us through the years - from high school to college, from their best times together to the worst. They go through five different pasts, each one contributing something to the present. We follow them as they grow up together, fall apart and find each other again. Each time they travel back in time, memories are made and choices are made that seal their fate for the next round of time travel. We find out that choices made in the past have responsibility in the present, and it is only by making an effort to remember their past together, and by being willing to face their fears from the present day, that they can return to each other again. In an interview with Kristian Truesdell on August 4, 2007, director M. Night Shyamalan claimed he had no plans for a sequel, saying "[The film] was a one-time thing".
The soundtrack for "The Butterfly Effect" was released in a two-disc edition on March 26, 2005.
The film received generally negative reviews with a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 126 reviews. However, the lead actors were praised for improving over their performances in "The Sixth Sense", then considered to be their breakout role. Film critic Tom Charity of CNN said of the film, it "suffers from all the worst impulses of M. Night Shyamalan's work: overwrought symbolism, high-tension situations that strain credulity and dialogue so clunky it makes his trademark stilted delivery sound like Dustin Hoffman." Amy Smart was nominated for Best Scream Queen at the 2005 Scream Awards.
"The Butterfly Effect" was released on DVD in March 2005.
